A Boy did once a Rose see,
A Rose on a heath.
She look'd so fair and lively,
That, when he saw her nearely,
She did him very please.
O Rose fair! o Rose red!

The boy then said: I take thee,
O Rose on the heath!
She answered him: I punish thee,
That thon mayst ever think on me,
Since it does me not please.

She did in her defense him rent,
But was to this misfortune bent,
